October 2022 letter
Dear Harrison families,
Those two words have become my favorite chant from our student section in the stands at athletic events this season. They have captured the faith we all have in our students not only on the sports fields, but in classrooms and especially in their capacity for goodness. It only takes a walk through our high school, watching our students in action as they engage with each other, their teachers and their studies, to see their beauty and compassion - and understand why we believe in them.
We began the new school year by inviting families into the high school for Open House. It was exciting to open our classrooms for the first in-person Open House in three years. If you were unable to attend this event, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher to introduce yourself and ask any questions you may have about the upcoming year.
Another way to learn more about the high school and your child’s school experience is through the PTA. September’s PTA Meeting served as an introduction to the high school. Our two Assistant Principals, Director of Guidance, Athletic Director, and Director of Fine & Performing Arts spoke about what to expect this school year. October’s PTA Meeting is this Wednesday, October 19th at 9:30 am and will feature a presentation on Self Care: Practicing Healthy Habits (Managing Your Child’s Screen Time, Sleep, and Schedule) presented by our Health Teacher Mrs. Kate Zanot, School Counselor Mr. Daniel Logue, and Social Worker Mrs. Dana McCarthy. We appreciate the PTA’s continued partnership by providing classroom grants, sponsoring many high school events, and hosting celebrations of our faculty and staff. You can find information on joining the PTA attached to this email.
An additional important partnership at the high school is with the Westchester County Student Assistance/Project SUCCESS Program. Our Student Assistance Counselor, Mrs. Dana McCarthy, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with specialized training in prevention and early intervention strategies with adolescents at risk of having substance or gambling related problems. If you have concerns, reach out directly to Mrs. McCarthy at 914-630-3145. All calls are confidential.
It’s an exciting time as our seniors begin to plan for their next steps beyond Harrison High School. Our seniors are in full swing with the College Process. They have joined us for the Senior Parent College Meeting, College Financial Aid Night, College Essay Writing, and the Seal of Biliteracy Information Night. Our upcoming events for seniors and their families include NCAA Athletics After High School, this Thursday, October 20th at 7pm, and FAFSA Completion Night (reach out to your child’s school counselor to sign up for this event).
